Brake and Fuel Line Placement


This page will show how i installed new fuel and brake lines on the Mustang.  I plan on having the car for a while so I decided to install stainless steel lines.  The cost is not much more than standard lines and they will look brand new forever.  I purchased the lines from a company called Fine Lines.  They sell most (if not all) lines for classic Mustangs.  I purchased my lines at the All Ford Nationals in Carlisle, PA, but they also have a website that you can order from.  If you click on their name above it will take you to their home page.


When I went to install the lines I realized that I did not know where the original clips that hold the lines to the chassis were supposed to go.  It took many days of searching the Internet trying to find pictures of where the clips were located.  One problem was the fact that the aftermarket frame rails did not come with holes pre-drilled and tapped for the clips.  Another problem was that the lines that I took off of the car were replacements and were not correct.  So basically I had nothing to reference.  Through the use of Internet images and forums I was able to install the lines in what I believe to be the correct locations.

Hopefully this page will help anyone having the same problem that I was. Take a look at the pictures below.  They should give you a good idea of what needs done to install brake and fuel lines.

One big challenge was trying to figure out how these clips work.  I got some help from www.1969stang.com forum on how to install them.

Here is another view of the clips
The clips wrap around the line..  Then the tab is fed through a hole in the transmission tunnel.  Once in the hole, the tabs on the front of the clip can be squeezed with pliers.  This causes the back tabs to expand and secure the clips in the hole.

Here is a picture of the installed clip.  This same procedure is followed for the rest of the clips of this style.
The following pictures show the placement of the clips inside of the transmission tunnel.

This picture shows where the retainer clips are located in the engine bay.
The following pictures show how the lines are run on a 28 spline rear end housing.





Now for the fuel lines. 

This is the same style clip that was used to mount the brake line in the transmission tunnel.  It is mounted using the exact same method.  These aftermarket floor pans did not have a hole drilled to mount the clip.  If this is the case on your Mustang simply drill a 5/16" hole where you would like to mount the clip.

This is the clip that attaches to the torque box.  The aftermarket torque box did not have this hole so it had to be drilled and tapped.  I used a 1/4" drill bit and a 5/16" NC tap.


Here is the routing around frame rail bend.  I saw many pictures on this routing, and they were all different.  This is the only way that this particular pre-bent line would work.  Please note that the axle bumper still needs installed.
