Disc Brake Conversion

This Mustang was originally equipped with drum brakes all around.  I never liked the way that the car stopped so I decided to upgrade the braking system to front disc brakes.  I was surprised to find that most kits available for my car were over $1,000.  In June (2012) I was at the Carlisle all Ford Nationals in Pennsylvania.  As I was walking around the swap meet I came across a vendor selling complete kits for $699.  The vendor was Manatee Mustang Supply out of Florida.  They do not have a website that I can find, but they are selling their kits on ebay for $699 + shipping.  I have to say that the kit could not be easier to install.  The following pictures show the installation at the wheels.  The master cylinder and power brake booster were direct bolt ins.  The kit came with a new pedal, but if your car was equipped with power brakes there is no need to change it.  The guy who sold me the kit said that a proportioning valve was not necessary and he was correct.  I run this set up with the existing drum brake distribution block and it works great.

The first step is to bolt the caliper bracket to the stock drum brake spindle with the supplied grade 8 bolts.

Next install wheel bearings and seals in the rotor.  Slide the rotors onto the spindle and reuse the original spindle nut to secure the rotor to the spindle.

Attach the caliper to the bracket using the supplied caliper bolts, and finally attach the supplied brake hose and the installation at the wheel is complete.

Here is a view of the driver's side.

  2. For the price they're hard to beat. I would definitely recommend buying better brake pads than what come in the kit. The ones that came with my kit are not very durable. After about 1000 miles they are worn down about half way. They also produce a lot of brake dust that gets all over your rims.
I have also noticed during hard breaking there is a vibration in the front end. I can't say for sure that it is the brake system though. It could be something in the suspension. I haven't had a chance to look into it too deeply.
